The Navigator Challenge
Swim across Tralee Bay for CHI, Ronald McDonald House and the RNLI
On Sunday, August 18th 2024, Tralee Bay Swimming Club will present an exiting challenge for experienced open water swimmers: the Navigator Challenge swim across Tralee Bay, from the scenic Derrymore strand to the seaside town of Fenit.

Entry is just €40 per swimmer, which includes day membership of TBSC, bus transfer to Derrymore strand and a custom "Navigator Challenge" swim hat.

The Challenge is named after St Brendan the Navigator, whose iconic statue stands guard in Tralee Bay and serves as your guide as you cross the bay. You will be accompanied by at least 2 powered RIBs and 20 kayaks. The RNLI will have a D-class inshore boat available on the day, subject to call outs.

The course is intended to challenge open water sea swimmers who feel comfortable taking on a 3.9km swim in tidal waters and who have recent experience of an organised swim of at least 1.5km (indoor times accepted) Over 18's only.

The course is a straight line course, marked with buoys. Following a beach start at Derrymore, the course makes for 2 inshore markers, before you will be sighting off Brendan the Navigator and to the end of Fenit Harbour. Buoys to the left of the harbour wall will mark the course towards the beach in Fenit. For safety reasons, you should pass centrally between harbour wall and the Wheel rock, avoiding lobster pots set close to harbour wall.
