With the summer weather again refusing to play ball this week, we struck it lucky on Tuesday with a welcome break from breezy conditions to give us a memorable evening of competitive fun on the water. A late decision to move the third swim event from Monday night (due to the windy conditions) certainly paid off, with the great turnout confirming the good call.

We had over 40 swimmers ready to take part in a 1200m lap of the buoys and a shorter 600m loop.

With the absence of several of our usual high fliers, the competition opened up and some excellent performances were the order of the evening. Dave Smith came out on top with a commendable time of 19:55, followed by a closely fought battle for 2nd between Emer McDonnell, Gavin Quinlivin and Brendan O'Connell - Emer coming out on top just ahead of a dead heat for third between Gavin and Brendan. They were followed by Shane OBrien and Brendan O'Conner, who finished just ahead of Cartriona Donovan in a close fought race. Mairead Fox had an excellent 8th place, just a minute ahead of Ciara Tierney who came home in 23:39, while Ailish Brosnan rounded out the Top Ten in 23:45

Dave Smith receiving the O'Sullivan Cup from Neil and members of the Fitzgibbon family.
The handicap adjusted results threw up a few surprises, with Emer in 6th, Eugene Baily in 5th - only just behind Ciara Tierney in 4th. 40 seconds ahead in 3rd came Sinead Kelleher, behind a strong 2nd place from Mairead Fox. But the deserved winner on the night was Niall O'Loinsigh - his excellent swim earned him top slot in the handicap adjusted listing - however his success may be a short lived tyranny with some scheming glances evident from the handicap committee.

Niall O'Loinsigh after winning the handicap event.
After the racing, we had an enjoyable BBQ - skillfully prepared by Denis Cronin, ably assisted by Rose, Anne and Frances. A big thanks you to all our Kayakers who ensured everyone's safety on the night, and all those who helped with timing, registration, setting up the food, etc. It was a big event, and its success is down to you guys, so thanks again.
