Last Thursday evening saw a great turnout for the clubs Kayak Safety course, to help train our members to confidently provide safety cover during our events.
It was a great chance to meet new members for this year, like Rob, Vicki, Donal and Diarmuid.
After a brief overview of the course, John introduced the candidates to the throwbag, part of our safety equipment that can help kayakers get a line to swimmers who have drifted far from them. Then, it was time to pair up and safely transfer the kayaks to the water. Once on the water, John was able to go through the various skills needed to maneuver the kayak in the water while maintaining a safe distance from swimmers.
The course was so successful, that we have arranged another course this Monday for those who may have missed out on the first. Again, many thanks to all the members who took the time to do this important course, ensuring we offer the safest environment for our swimmers. And our thanks to John Edwards of Wild Water Adventures for providing the training.
