The Buoys (and dolphins) are back....

des9272

One of the sure signs of the summer swimming season getting into full swing is the annual appearance at Fenit of the yellow buoys that mark out our swim course. This year is no exception, with an early start by Noel Hilliard and crew to set them up - no easy task considering the size of the end buoys alone and the cable and anchoring needed to secure them against the worst weather an Irish summer can throw at them, while also being able to deal with a 5m tidal range.

Getting things ready - a lot of work goes into the buoys.

This year the crew was joined by a very eager swimmer - keen to get in a few fast laps of the course before the slower humans turn up! Some fantastic footage of our local pod of dolphins keen to get involved in everything.

In case you are wondering about how to use the buoys, there's a useful blog post which outlines the correct way to swim around the course to avoid collisions and possible injuries, and some tips to stay safe in varying conditions. For now, the buoys go out without flags, but they will be put in place in the next few days, as we have some brand new flags arriving.

Let the Summer commence...

And always "Think Safety" when out on the water.
